Background
Bio Products Laboratory Ltd. (BPL) is a Government owned not for profit organisation which turns blood plasma in to a range of life saving products. It is committed to research and development to maintain a key position in a constantly changing market in the 21st century.
Requirement
BPL required an upgrade and validation of its critical blood plasma control system ensuring compliance with FDA21CFR11 legislation. The process would ensure future proofing and improved productivity.
Response
HFL implemented equipment enabling the entire process to be monitored and controlled using just two pairs of Schneider Telemecanique Modicon Quantum PLCs linked to 1400 I/O distributed around the plant's various processes. HFL configured an interface for use by operators using Monitor Pro SCADA software. The system incorporates a secure SQL-server database designed to comply with the FDA21CFR11 legislation, providing full traceability. HFL's planning ensured that much of the work was carried out prior to switching over to the new equipment ensuring that shutdown time was minimised. Throughout the installation process HFL ensured critical control of parameters, such as temperature, to ensure the process and all equipment installed was intrinsically safe.
Result
The new system can be expanded and modified without disruption and BPL now has increased productivity and improved control performance with compliance to regulatory standards.
